Jesse Ward Laughlin (1887-1968)

Jesse LAUGHLIN, born September 2, 1887 in Martin City, Jackson County, Missouri, was the son of John Breckenridge LAUGHLIN and Annie MORTON. This was near the town of New Santa Fe, the first stop for travelers from Independence, Missouri, on their western migration.

When Jesse was about three years old, the family moved across the state line to Kansas. He grew up in Oxford and Aubry townships, Johnson County, Kansas. Jesse married Cora Belle FILTINGBERGER on August 19, 1909 in Johnson County, Kansas. The couple had five children.

Jesse made a living running steam-powered heavy equipment, threshing wheat fields and constructing roads for the growth of Johnson County. On his military registration for World War II, he was described as having blue eyes, brown hair, and brown skin (likely tanned from spending his days outdoors). He died on February 5, 1968, in Spring Hill, Johnson County, Kansas, and was buried in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery.
