Laura B. Cole was born December 20, 1882 in Seneca County, Ohio, the third child of Benjamin and Rebecca Ann (Elliott) Cole. Before she turned three, her father died, aged 35. Sometime between 1885 and 1890, Rebecca remarried, to Edward Roux. The family is found in Stafford County, Kansas is 1895, though it is not certain whether the move or the marriage came first.
From 1900 on, the family seems to have moved around quite a bit. In 1900, they are in Stafford County, Kansas, but in 1905 they are in Pawnee County. 1910 has them back in Stafford County, and 1915 finds them in Comanche County. By about 1921, they are in Stafford County once more, where they remained until Edward’s and Rebecca’s deaths.
Somewhere in these peregrinations, Laura made the acquaintance of a widowed farmer from Stafford County. Lloyd Suiter had been born in Seneca County, Ohio, like Laura had, and had moved to Kansas in 1895. He had married, and settled down in Stafford County to raise his family. His wife had died in 1919, leaving Lloyd to raise three children, between the ages of 7 and 16. His wife’s parents attempted to help, but it was a difficult situation for him to be in.
However they met, Lloyd and Laura were married in 1922. Laura was 39 at the time, an advanced age for a first-time bride. She settled in to her new role of wife and mother, and added two more children to the family. Lawrence Lavern was born in 1923, and Ethel L. about 1925. For a time, in the late 1920s/early 1930s, Laura’s mother, Rebecca, and niece, Margaret, were also part of the household. Later, in the 1950s, two grandsons lived with Lloyd and Laura, as well.
Rebecca passed away on October 11, 1958, age 75. She was buried in the Farmington Cemetery, Stafford County, Kansas, next to her husband, Lloyd.
